Probation Officer Handgun Safety Course
As required through the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Academy, this course is 24 hours long. It will be 3 days (8 hours per day).
The first two days are in the classroom and the last day is on the range. You may purchase online or contact Scott for an invoice.
*If you would like us to travel to you for the entire training or for just a portion of it, there will be per diem and travel costs associated.
Course Objectives
- Be able to safely handle their firearm and care for it
- Discuss and understand the legal standards for use of force
- Explain when to use less-lethal force
- Understand the psychological issues that come with using
deadly force
- Demonstrate and fire from standing, kneeling, and seated
positions
- Conduct two combat reloads
- Successfully move to cover as well as shoot from cover

Day 1 (8 hours)Firearms Safety
- Situational Awareness, Critical Thinking, and Mindset
- Firearms Safety Rules
- Handgun parts, functionality, disassemble, cleaning and reassembly
- Handgun inspection and malfunctions
- Proper storage
Day 2 (8 hours)Legal Standards for Use of Force
- Cover and explain Graham V Conner, Tennessee V Garner, and 4th Amendment
- Local SOP/ Directives for your specific department
- De-Escalation Techniques
- Indiana’s Statewide Deadly Force Policy
- Define reasonable force
- Define deadly force
- Justification for use of deadly force
- Less-Lethal Alternatives to Deadly Force
- Definition of less lethal
- Two primary situations to use less lethal
- At a minimum five (5) types of less lethal weapons currently used in law enforcement
- Psychological Issues in Deadly Force Encounters
- Lapses of memory, auditory exclusion, feeling ‘dream like,’ adrenaline dump, high blood pressure, mental exhaustion, replaying it in your head over-and-over, dreams, etc.
- Shot placement most likely to stop an aggressive suspect
- Local resources available after a use of force incident
- Use of Force Concepts
Day 3 (8 hours)Safety Brief
- Follow all ILEA range safety procedures
- Everyone is a range safety officer
- Equipment
- Airsoft pistols and safety gear
- Ear and eye protection
- Clean and serviceable duty weapon with ammunition
- Foul weather gear
- Water and sunscreen
- Handgun Retention Drills
- Officers will be taught retention drills with rubber weapons as well as airsoft weapons
- Dynamic Firearms Drills
- Practical exercise on clearing malfunctions
- Magazine changes
- Two (2) types of reloads
- Move and shoot
- Handgun flashlight techniques
- Types of draw stroke
- Explain and utilize cover and concealment
- Basic Marksmanship Proficiency Training and Testing
The initial qualification must meet or exceed the practical skills testing requirement (qualification) given the basic training course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (80% on three (3) consecutive attempts with six (6) targets if needed)
Each probation officer must qualify annually using the ILEA approved course of fire
Annual training will include qualification, static, dynamic, and simulations
REFUND and CANCELLATION:
It is our desire to serve our students and customers to the very best of our ability and to the highest standards of excellence. This page explains our policies on issuing refunds.
Refunds will be issued in the same manner as payment. If payment was via credit card, refund will be issued to the card used. If payment was by check, refund will be by check.
For all training courses, payment is due in full to reserve a seat in the course unless specifically stated otherwise.
If a student cancels their seat in the course more than 7 days from course date, a full refund will be issued.
If a student cancels their seat in the course less than 7 days from course date, a 50% refund will be issued.
No refunds for course seats will be issued on or after the date of the course.
Students who are removed from a course or facility for any reason, as stated in our hold harmless agreement, will not be issued a refund for their course fees or membership.
If for any reason a course is canceled, students will receive a full refund promptly at the time of cancellation as well as notice of the cancellation as soon as possible.
